What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic Dentistry is very difficult to define, and the term cosmetic really should be de-emphasized because it implies something out of the ordinary. Restoration of the shape, contour and function of teeth so that they align better, work better, and as a consequence, look normal, is not out of the ordinary. For the purpose of this question, Cosmetic Dentistry is the use of tooth colored filling materials or artificial materials that can be made of plastic or porcelain which allows the option to enhance the natural appearance of a tooth or a smile. Furthermore, orthodontics (braces) can be an excellent tool to align teeth, establish the proper fit of teeth and enhance a smile as a consequence.
How important is your smile?
Your smile defines you; the perception that you have healthy teeth, healthy gums, and a beautiful smile only serves to display an image of self confidence and positive potential. The psychology of a smile cannot be ignored.

Who is a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry?
Everyone!
Cosmetic dentistry, is it worth the time and the cost?
Cosmetic Dentistry is not just “make my teeth as white as they can be”. Dentistry’s goal is the maintenance and restoration of not only the tooth structure, but the establishment of an environment that will promote the health of all the supporting gingival and boney tissues of the jaws, as well as the orthopedics of the tempero-mandibular joint (TMJ). The maintenance and or restoration of these dental dynamics are critical for keeping your teeth for the rest of your life. Simply because modern technology has allowed us to restore teeth with materials that mimic tooth structure and give us the option to enhance their appearance should in no way be interpreted negatively because they are cosmetic anymore than an amputee should be accused or taxed for choosing to use a prosthesis that looks like a missing limb versus a peg-leg or hook.
How long will my new smile last?
Smiles should last for many years, but as in all man-made materials, there will be degradation based on environmental and behavioral factors. The oral cavity is exposed to wide temperature variations; hot coffee followed by a bite of ice cream; alcohol exposure; exposures to acidic foods and drinks such as colas, citrus fruits and tomatoes. And oh, by the way, there are still germs in your mouth that want to eat your teeth, so brush and floss only the teeth you want to keep!
How quickly will I be able to complete my cosmetic dentistry treatment?
This is entirely dependent on what procedure will be accomplished. If there is an orthodontic component to straighten teeth, one to two years may be necessary. If porcelain veneers are utilized, two to four weeks are necessary to complete the procedures. Bleaching can be divided into an initial procedure and ongoing procedures. Initial procedures can be a onetime Dental office procedure, followed by daily home exposures for one to two weeks, and then periodic ongoing enhancements by your Dental Professional.
